(Trey is 2 years and 8 months)
Something has clicked this week... or connected in our little man's brain. I don't know what? or why? Quite honestly I am a little fearful to even say this "out loud" on this blog. If I don't, I will explode. I want to shout it out to the world... and do cartwheels down the street! (wait.. scratch the cartwheels)
So guess what?!?! TREY CAN TALK!!! He has been saying the alphabet for about 2 months now.. nearly every letter is spoken clearly except L,M,N and W.. not bad for only 2 1/2 years old! Then a couple weeks ago he started doing what I would call "parrot talk". He would repeat some words.. or similar sounds of the words that we would speak to him. I don't think he knew what he was saying or what the words meant. He was merely imitating... but that gave us hope that the language would come!
This week he has made incredible improvement. It is like a look of understanding that comes along with the words from his little mouth now. I posted the following on my Autism Momma Facebook page yesterday:
Today, we were driving to Target after driving through McDonald's for his favorite... chicken nuggets. I said to Daddy, "I am going to try and get him to say 'more' with these nuggets." We have been working with him along with our OT Miss Amanda for months now to use sign language and/or speak one word... "more". He has showed zero interest in either.. and has even thrown a big fit or two when we try to get him to repeat us. So at this moment.. for whatever reason... he actually got it! I just said "Trey, do you want more?"
He paused for a second, then his little hands started doing the more sign... fast, fast, fast! It was fast like when he claps.. only this was different. One hand was in the clap position.. and the other in the signing-for-the-word-"more" position. Then out it came.. before we could actually process the amazement of him actually signing the word... he exclaimed, "MORE!"
As my friend Brandy commented above, what a wonderful sound it is to our ears!!!
